A Meeting of the Minds
Apr 16, 2018Yesterday, I was en route home after an incredible weekend of teaching MindScape in Kitchener, ON. Due to the ice storms, it was quite an adventurous weekend getting to and from Kitchener and back to Toronto to fly home. To add to that adventure, I had the pleasure of meeting an inventor.
As I stood looking at the flight schedule screen in the Toronto airport, the person beside me struck up a conversation. Considering our flight had changed gates and been delayed numerous times already, we had something in common. As we began chatting, I mentioned I had been teaching over the weekend and was flying home. He noted that he had been in Niagara working on the tech for his business and was heading home to see family.
Now, coincidentally, (WINK) on my flights TO Toronto just a few days prior, I had nailed down the plot for my next children's book. Everything just flowed together, almost effortlessly, as I wrote about a boy who is a mind pioneer--aka an inventor. The plot came together like magic and just like that I was explaining my next children's book about an inventor to a REAL inventor.
Now, he would not yet call himself that, but after working on his vision for the last four years, an inventor is exactly what he is. We dove deep with our conversation right from the get go. I asked if he builds his invention in his mind, mentioning that Tesla and Edison did so. He hadn't. He asked if I had heard of Howard Hughes or watched the movie called The Aviator. I hadn't. Back and forth our conversation went, opening both of our minds in ways we would have never expected.
For the entire four-hour flight, we picked each other's brains, talked about intuition, beliefs, when ideas flow best, being in the creative zone, and trail blazing to follow through on your vision. We spoke about our upbringing, the development of our beliefs, as I was incredibly interested to peek into the mind of an inventor.
He gets his best ideas when he is in the shower. I use MindScape to access my creative zone, expand my ideas, write my children's books, and so much more. I told him about the brain states and how the alpha state is a pretty incredible idea state. We talked about courage, persistence, and what it takes to follow through on a vision. I sent him articles I had been reading, he recommended his favourite mind-opening movies, and I told him mine. We discussed our visions and where we each wanted to take our ideas.
Now, it is probably quite obvious that inventors are visionaries. So, it was incredible to witness just how big he thinks, how outside-the-box he goes, and how he doesn't let anything get in his way. He definitely had his ducks in a row and was a very left-brained guy. I, on the other hand, had moved away from my rigid left-brained tendencies and had been giving all the credit to my intuitive, creative, and imaginative, big-dreaming right brain. While, I'd been left-brained for so long, it's not as though I could drop my left-brained tendencies, but I wasn't giving the proper value to the left brain anymore.
That insight alone brought so many insights to the forefront for me. I began to understand just how important the left brain is in order to have the structure and discipline to bring ideas to life. While I had been a strong left-brained thinker for most of my life, in learning, using, and teaching MindScape, I had begun to give the right-brain far more credit than it's more logical counterpart. Having such an in-depth conversation with an inventor opened my mind to mind-blowing potential and possibilities that can unfold when both brains are balanced, coordinated, and working together in unison. Often, it can be a tricky and intricate process to find the sweet spot of the minds where the flow state patiently waits. But, this is the place where all the magic happens. Over-logical minds force things to happen and lack the creative-edge. Overly-creative minds often lack the structure to bring ideas and visions to life. The integration of the minds is and always has been the key to unlocking powerful ideas and bringing them to life. This awareness was huge, mind-shifting, and an incredible realization.
As our conversation unraveled, I continued to understand how I truly needed to plug the structure of the left brain that he was so powerfully demonstrating, into the intuitive and imaginative right brain that I had been so focused on utilizing. THIS is where the magic happens. I went home wondering how I could up-level, where I needed to think bigger, and how I had been not giving my left-brain enough credit. The growth that can come from mind-blowing conversations is ten-fold when you look at the aspects of mirroring. So, that's exactly what I set out to do.
This serendipitous meeting of the minds turned on so many lightbulbs for me, and for him, too (so he says). It was a very enlightening conversation and fuelled a lot of excitement for where I would like to elevate my vision. We both left feeling excited, inspired, and full of far more insights than either of us could have ever expected.
I told him I needed a picture for when he was famous. Here's the proof:
Just like that, my mind was blown wide open and some pretty incredible possibilities transpired in the days and months to come. All from being open to talking to a stranger!
Be open to opening your mind! You will never regret it!
